Donna Shetland Lace Cowl Pattern
Donna Shetland Lace Cowl Pattern
A cosy cowl, knitted in the round, using a selection of traditional Shetland lace patterns with a pretty edging that can be blocked into soft or more dramatic points. Suitable for knitters with some experience of lace, the skill level for this design is classified as Intermediate.
Knitted in a laceweight or 4-ply yarn, there are pattern stitches on the majority of rows but it only uses basic lace stitches and is worked in the round, and therefore with the knit side facing. The pattern can easily be adapted to make a larger circumference cowl if required (more yarn would be required).
The cowl is designed to be worked on a circular needle and can be made with approximately 60g (240m) of 4-ply or 35g (280m) of laceweight yarn.
The 4-ply sample was knitted in Alpaca BFL 4-ply (discontinued - substitute with British Alpaca Wool 4-ply) in Summer Garden on 3mm and 4mm needles. Finished measurements after blocking: 60cm (24 inches) in circumference, 30cm (12 inches) deep.
The laceweight sample was worked in Yak Merino Lace in Orchid Deep on 2.75mm and 3.5mm needles. Finished measurements after blocking: 60cm (24 inches) in circumference, 30cm (12 inches) deep.
The lace pattern is both charted and written in full.
