Yarn Sources
We know many of our customers like to know the provenance or source of the yarns they use, so we've tried to provide as much information as we can here. We try to support smaller producers where possible and are always looking for sources of high quality British yarns in particular.
Wools
Most of our Wool yarns are from sheep raised in the British Isles or the Falkland Islands and are spun in the UK wherever possible. Shetland Wool from the Shetland Islands, plus Blue Faced Leicester, Masham, Wensleydale and Cotswold are all from the UK, including some sourced direct from the producers. Corriedale and Polwarth both come from the Falkland Islands. Our non-Falklands merino comes from small herders in the mountains of Peru, for whom looking after their livestock is the only way to receive the highest price possible for their fleece and guarantee themselves an income. None of our Merino is sourced from Australia, or from places where mulesing is practised.
Alpaca
Our British Alpaca yarns are sourced from breeders throughout the UK. Our non-British Alpaca comes from the Peruvian Andes and is sourced from smaller farmers in the region.
Camel
Camelhair comes from Africa.
Cashmere
Cashmere is usually obtained from Mongolia and China. Some of our Cashmere yarns are spun in Scotland.
Mohair
Most of our Mohair comes from Europe and South Africa. Our Corriedale Mohair 4-ply uses British Mohair.
Silk
Most silk comes from China.
Yak
Yak comes from Tibet and Mongolia.
