Sorcha Shrug Pattern

Sorcha (pronounced Sor-ka) is a simply-shaped shrug, knitted in laceweight or 4-ply, featuring a traditional Shetland lace pattern.

• The main piece is a simple rectangle worked flat
• Stitches for the ribbed cuffs and edging of the laceweight version are picked up and worked in the round
• For the 4-ply version the cuffs are knitted flat and the edging picked up along them so that the cuffs can be fastened with buttons (the cuffs could also be worked in the round if preferred)
• Although the lace pattern is worked on both right and wrong side rows, the background is garter stitch so this is fairly simple to knit
• The pattern can be adapted for working with a stocking stitch ground if preferred
• The size is easily adjustable for both width and depth
• The design is recommended for intermediate knitters or those with some experience of knitted lace

Instructions are given in 4 sizes.

Laceweight:    64 (81 / 97 / 114) cm [25 ( 32 / 38 / 45) inches] wide
                       51 cm (20 inches) deep for all sizes - adjustable

Yarn required: 1 ( 1 / 2 / 2) x 100g skeins
Samples used approximately 70g/560m of BFL Purest Lace (800m/100g) in Fading Blues or 80g/560m of Mohair Lace (700m/100g) in Lavender Sky for Size 1, using 2.75mm and 3.25mm circular needles

4-ply:              72 (82 / 97 / 112) cm [28 ( 32.5 / 38 / 44) inches] wide
                       60 cm (23.5 inches) deep for all sizes - adjustable

Yarn required: 1 ( 1 / 2 / 2) x 100g skeins in Main Colour (A), and 1 ( 1 / 1 / 1) x 100g skeins in Contrast Colour (B)
Sample used approximately 75g/340m of British Suri Alpaca Silk 4-ply (450m/100g) in Frosty Skies and 40g/180m in Iris Among the Bluebells for Size 2, using 3.00mm and 4.00mm circular needles

(Note:  If working the 4-ply shrug in a single colour you should be able to work the entire garment using 2 x 100g skeins (900m) for Sizes 1, 2 and 3)

The samples shown were all photographed on a model with 92 cm (36 inch) bust.  The Laceweight samples were worked in Size 1 and the 4-ply in Size 2.
