Ulyana Shawl Pattern - 4-ply Version
Ulyana Shawl Pattern - 4-ply Version
This design is a hybrid between a wide triangular shawl and a crescent shape, worked top down in two-colour stripes of varying depths, using a number of different lace patterns and areas of garter stitch and stocking stitch for added texture. Increases are worked at both side edges and either side of a central spine stitch. A laceweight version of this design is available here.
The skill level for this design is classified as Intermediate, for those with a reasonable level of experience in knitted lace. The pattern is presented both in chart form and as fully written instructions. The lace pattern is not difficult but it does require a little concentration, and I would not recommend it for beginners simply due to the large number of stitches on the needle at the end!
The sample shawl was knitted in our British Suri Alpaca Silk 4-ply in Amethyst After Midnight and Pale Amethyst, using 1 x 100g/450m skein of each colour. The shawl measures 230cm (90 inches) across the wingspan of the upper edge, and 92cm (36 inches) deep at centre back, worked on 4.00mm needles. A long circular needle is required to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the last few rows.
The edging has optional beading - approximately 500 beads are required for this version. The sample started and finished with the darker colour yarn but you can of course vary this as preferred.
